Both the stud and the female MUST be registered CMD's and BOTH must have breeder dog status in order for the litter to be registered!
Due to variable genetics that are a result of the CMDA's current generational type registery system, all breeding dogs must be approved by the CMDA in order for the resulting litter to be registerable. Unless a breeding dog has a "Purebred" registration certificate, even if it was registered as a puppy, it must complete a Breeder Dog approval process, and be assigned a "Breeder" registration certificate and identification number. This process helps ensure the Colorado Mountain Dog Breed Standards remain the common goal of breeders, while also helping to prevent many of the genetic health issues commonly seen in some purebred livestock guardian dog lines. The CMDA reserves the right to revoke a "Breeder" registration status in the event we receive complaints of a breeder or its offspring developing undesirable characteristics that could influence the ultimate standards of the breed. Any fees paid up to that point are non-refundable.
To qualify for "Breeder" registration status, a dog must:
The Breeder Dog registration process involves several steps that must be completed, IN ORDER, by the applicant. The CMDA reserves the right to accept or deny registration to any dog at any time during the application process. Application fees are non-refundable, but are divided between the 2 steps, in order to minimize the risk to the applicant.
Step 1: Submit the "CMDA Breeder Dog Application” below, the non-refundable Application Processing Fee, and photos of your dog, standing, from each side, front, and back, and 2 photos of your dog with your livestock.
Step 2: If your application and photos are approved, schedule a veterinary exam and hip x-rays ( OFA is suggested, but not required) for your dog, print a copy of the "CMDA Veterinary Exam Report," and have your vet complete the form. Submit the report and the non-refundable Veterinary Exam Report Processing Fee to the CMDA.
If the Veterinary Exam Report is approved, you will receive a new CMD Registration Certificate, with a new status of "Breeder” listed and a new registration number, which you will then use to register future litters.
Because the Breeder Dog registration process involves multiple steps, with no guarantee the dog will be approved, the CMDA has designed the fees to be paid in 2 increments. This covers the CMDA costs for processing at each step, while reducing the financial risk to the applicant. Fees are non-refundable. Please note that if your dog is denied Breeder Approval, it may also be denied CMD registration for the same reason(s).
